===================================================================== KnowledgeWorkshop 2.7 ===================================================================== Maximize the Notepad Window to read this file more easily. Thank you for your interest in KnowledgeWorkshop. This file contains important supplementary and late-breaking information that may not appear in the main product documentation. We recommend that you read this file in its entirety. NOTES: 1. To install this software, you may require ADMINISTRATION PRIVILEGES on the target computer (see below). 2. If you are running KnowledgeWorkshop version 2.0 or 2.1 a database format update will be required. You will see a dialog box for this when you run KW v2.7 for the first time and you should allow the upgrade to automatically take place. It is advisable to first make a backup copy of your KW database files. 3. Version 2.7.3 contains a solution for a problem whereby if a snap-shot (copy) of a web page contains text which you highlighted using the highlighter tool, then those highlights are not rendered correctly if you open that snap-shot for viewing multiple times within one execution session of the program. The solution involved changing the path used to the temporary file created when you view the snap-shot content. This means that if you highlighted snap-shot content prior to version 2.7.3, those highlights will not be rendered. Do not upgrade to 2.7.3 or later if this is an issue for you. Contents -------- * System Requirements * Installation * Installation of Add-on for Mozilla Firefox Browser * Upgrading from KnowledgeWorkshop version 1.x * Licensing & Activation * Notices * How to get technical support System Requirements ------------------- - Personal computer with an Intel Pentium 233 MegaHertz (MHz) or higher processor, Pentium III recommended. - 128 MegaBytes (MB) of RAM or greater recommended - 180 MB of available hard-disk space if the database is installed locally. For use from multiple computers by the same person in an organization it is recommended that the database be stored on a shared network drive. - Super VGA (800 × 600) or a higher-resolution monitor. Larger resolutions will progressively increase usability. - Microsoft Windows® Vista or XP. - Internet Explorer 5.5 or later MUST be installed on your computer Installation using the Standard Installer ----------------------------------------- It is recommended that you use an account with local administrator privileges when performing the installation. You may, depending on your computer's settings, be able to achieve a successful installation without these privileges if you select target folders which you have full access to, however, other computer users may not be able to use the installed application, and the add-ins for Internet Explorer and Outlook may not operate. Installation Steps: Step 1. Double-click on the installation executable file. Step 2. Read the license agreement, if you agree with its terms check the [I accept the license agreement]. You must accept this agreement to continue with the installation. Step 3. Select a location in which to install the program files. Step 4. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you are not installing with a local administrator account or if you do not have Microsoft Outlook installed on your computer you may see some error messages. Choose the "ignore" option. KnowledgeWorkshop is built around a web browser and requires access to the Internet in order to show Internet content, and to activate its license. If your computer is using firewall software, you may have to configure the firewall software to allow the kworkshop.exe program to access the network. If you encounter problems accessing web pages using KnowledgeWorkshop, such as "This program cannot display the webpage" while other programs can, it indicates a firewall configuration issue. Portable Installation --------------------- An alternative download from http://www.kworkshop.com/downloads/software.shtm is the PortableInstallation. In this approach you download a .zip file containing the KnowledgeWorkshop program, utilities and associated support files. You can unzip this to a portable storage device, such as a USB data plug (or thumb drive) USB hard drive etc. You can run the software directly from this storage device by double-clicking the kworkshop.exe executable. The portable installation approach is designed for situations where you need to use different computers, and want to plug in your USB device and run KnowledgeWorkshop. In this situation your KnowledgeWorkshop activation is tied to your USB storage device, and not the computer you used to download the software. It can also be used if the computer you are using has a security policy set to disable the running of application installers. Note: the Portable Installation has some drawbacks: It does not automatically configure shortcuts (you can do this manually if you wish.) It also does not configure the Window's Registry to enable full Internet Explorer and Outlook integration. Drive names: If you are using a Portable Installation, you need to be aware that different computers may assign a different drive letter to the USB storage device when plugged in. This can cause some issues. File paths stored in configuration files can be rendered invalid. To deal with this you should use the windows command prompt and enter the SUBST command. If you have been using the USB drive on a computer where it was known as E:, and then you plug it into another computer where it is known as F:, then run the command "SUBST E: F:\" without the quotes. This tells windows to treat any references to the E: drive as though they were referring to F:. You can undo this with the command "SUBST /D E:" Installation of Add-on for Mozilla Firefox Browser -------------------------------------------------- If you use the Mozilla Firefox browser and want to install the add-on which enables you to save web page addresses in KnowledgeWorkshop then follow these extra installation steps: 1. Ensure the required runtime packages are installed: a. Login as administrator b. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the KnowledgeWorkshop installation folder (which you chose during the installation. This defaults to C:\Program Files\LMS\kworkshop2. Open the "Binaries" folder. Run the vcredist_x86.exe program. If on a Windows Vista machine, right click and select "Run as administrator". This program is an additional installer which installs some needed program libraries that the Firefox add-on requires and it originates from Microsoft Corporation. 2. Restart Firefox, and look for the "Save URL in KnowledgeWorkshop" menu item under the Tools menu. On trying to click this, if you get an error message stating that the required add-on component was not found then try the following additional steps: a. Close all instances of the Firefox browser. b. Using Windows File Explorer go to your Firefox profile folder. This is usually located under your home folder under: If Windows Vista: AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles or if earlier Windows versions: Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles in a folder ending with ".default". c. Delete (send to trash) the following two files (which will be auto regenerated when Firefox is next run): compreg.dat xpti.dat These files contain the component registry for your profile, and Firefox will be triggered to regenerate them and install new components when it discovers that they are missing at the time of the next restart. Installation of Add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird E-mail Client ------------------------------------------------------------ If you use the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client and want to install the add-on which enables you to save e-mails in KnowledgeWorkshop then follow these extra installation steps: 1. Ensure the required runtime packages are installed: (see step 1 of the installation of the Firefox add-on above. If you have already performed this step for the Firefox add-on, there is no need to repeat it. 2. Restart Thunderbird, and look for the "Save item in KnowledgeWorkshop" under the Tools menu. On trying to click this, if you get an error message stating that the required add-on component was not found then try the following additional steps: a. Close all instances of the Thunderbird program. b. Using Windows File Explorer go to your Thunderbird profile folder. This is usually located under your home folder under: If Windows Vista: AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles or if earlier Windows versions: Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles in a folder ending with ".default". c. Delete (send to trash) the following two files (which will be auto regenerated when Thunderbird is next run): compreg.dat xpti.dat These files contain the component registry for your profile, and Thunderbird will be triggered to regenerate them and install new components when it discovers that they are missing at the time of the next restart. Upgrading from KnowledgeWorkshop version 1.x -------------------------------------------- If you have been using KnowledgeWorkshop version 1.x and want to move your data to the new version 2 system this section describes what actions you need to take. The type and method of data storage in version 2 is considerably different to that in version 1 so database upgrade is not as straightforward as minor changes to the database tables within a major release. Moving your KW data to version 2 involves exporting it to a knodule using the export wizard in version 1.x, converting the knodule to a version 2 knodule, and then importing that knodule into KW version 2. Here are the steps: 1. Install KW version 2 to a different program folder than used for v1. Also, when running KW version 2 for the first time you will be prompted to select a folder to hold your database files. Create a new folder for this. Do not use the same folder for v1 and v2 database files. 2. Prior to uninstalling KW version 1.x, export your data using the export wizard (available from the toolbar or File->Import/Export menu) to a knodule. For large databases, you should do this in chunks, exporting branches of your knowledge tree one at a time, to a separate knodule, such that each chunk contains at most a couple of hundred items and your computer's memory is not overloaded. Unless hard drive space is a problem, do not select the option to compress the knodule or else there will be a time penalty. Note: KW version 1.x and KW version 2 can co-exist on your computer, so you can move your data into KW version 2 prior to uninstalling version 1.x. 3. Convert the knodule(s) generated from step 1 from the version 1 format to version 2 knodule format. A utility program called "knoduleconv" is available from the Start Menu->Programs->LMS->KnowledgeWorkshop2->Utilities folder. It will prompt you to select the knodule to convert, and also a file to save the converted version 2 knodule to. Again, unless hard drive space is a problem, do not select the option to compress the knodule. 4. Import the version 2 knodule into KW version 2. To do this either double-click the converted knodule, or from KW version 2 invoke the Import wizard from the toolbar or from the File->Import/Export menu. Licensing, Activation and Registration -------------------------------------- In order to to ensure that you are happy with KnowledgeWorkshop before purchasing it, the application incorporates a trial period of 30 days from the time of first use. During this time you have full use of the application, with no capacity limits imposed. If you wish to continue using KnowledgeWorkshop after this trial period then you will either have to register it for personal use, or purchase a license and activate it. Both of these options are described below. After the trial period expires, if you have neither registered the product nor purchased and activated a license, then you will continue to have read access to your information, however you will not be able to modify it or add to it. NOTE: During the trial period, only users with computer administration privileges may use the software with full functionality, otherwise the software behaves as if the trial period has expired, permitting "viewer-only" functionality. If you don't have this privilege level, then registering the software, as described below, will enable you to use the software. Registration: This is an on-line process whereby you register yourself as a user of KnowledgeWorkshop and you receive a registration code by e-mail which you enter into a special registration dialog in KnowledgeWorkshop. This entitles you to continue to use the software for personal use only, without having to purchase a license. If you intend to use the software in a non-personal capacity (e.g. as part of your job, or for commercial purposes) then you must purchase and activate a license. You can register the software anytime during (or after) the trial period by selecting "Register software..." from the Help menu. This provides you with a request code, and a button which launches your browser, navigates to the registration website and presents a form for you to complete. On submitting this form you will receive a registration code by e-mail which you then copy and paste into the space provided under the above mentioned button. Following registration, the product will operate as The Personal Edition. The web-page at http://www.kworkshop.com/products/comparisons.shtm provides a comparison of the different editions. Privacy: The information you provide during the registration and activation process will be used by the company to determine the number of people using the product, their geographic spread, and to send occasional, infrequent email to our users about product developments that may be of interest. See the privacy policy at http://www.kworkshop.com/aboutus/privacy.shtm. Purchase and Activation of a License: If you are using KnowledgeWorkshop as part of your job, or for commercial purposes, or if you need to store more information than is possible with The Personal Edition, then you can purchase a license at http://www.kworkshop.com/purchase/overview.shtm. After making the purchase, you will receive a License Code by email. This code must then be activated on your computer (select "Activate software..." from the Help menu. The activation can be completed automatically on-line, or can be done via email. For further information on our activation process please see http://www.kworkshop.com/support/activation_faq.shtm. For organizations where a group of users exists, the license manager option may be of interest over individual licenses. The license manager provides centralized control of license-seats, and enables a pool of license-seats to be shared among the users. See http://www.kworkshop.com/products/kshare.shtm if you are interested in this form of licensing.
